Did you know: If the sound of a bursting balloon gives you a startle then you are not alone. A bursting balloon can indeed cause a small sound explosion! The fast release of the balloon’s energy, or of the compressed air, makes the hole in the balloon expand almost at the speed of sound within the natural rubber. Since this speed is much greater than the speed at which sound travels in air, the hole in the balloon in fact breaks the sound barrier and causes a sound explosion.
